New Lawn
Give your new lawn the best chance of thriving by planting it at the right time. Although you can install a lawn at any time of the year, some seasons will be more difficult. And, it may depend on the climate of your area. The ideal time is when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold and during the active growing season.
For warm season grasses, the active growing season typically ranges between spring and autumn. During this time, lawn roots will establish quickly, and your new lawn will be stronger quicker.
You’ll need to consider the temperature as well. If it is too hot, your lawn will struggle and need more water. However, if it is too cold, your lawn will be will be semi-dormant and its roots won’t grow properly.
But, what is the difference between planting a new lawn on an 18-degree day in winter rather than an 18-degree day in spring? Even if the air temperature is the same, the soil temperature won’t be. During winter, it is the soil temperature that causes semi-dormancy in lawns.
So, when is it the best time to plant your new lawn? It’s right now, in spring. The conditions are mild and will allow a strong root system to establish before the summer heat. Spring will give your lawn the best chance of survival and growth. It also won’t need as much water as you would need to combat the heat further into the warmer seasons.
