Mowing, watering and fertilising are the core practices in maintaining a healthy lawn.

Know how to do these properly so your lawn can be it’s very best.

Mowing your lawn promote healthy growth and keeps the grass looking fresh and green. How often you mow will depend on the type of grass, as will the height. You should consider leaving your lawn a bit longer if you have high foot traffic. It’s important to only mow a third off the grass blade at a time to avoid scalping the lawn. And, remember to mow when it’s dry. If you mow wet grass the clippings will stick to the mower and clump, which will result in an uneven cut. Wet clippings can also promote lawn diseases. Finally, keep your mower blades sharp for a cleaner trim and to reduce mowing time.

Fertiliser provides your lawn with the essential nutrients it needs to thrive. It will help the grass to establish growth to outcompete weeds and fend off disease. Unless you’re correcting a current problem, slow-release fertilisers are preferable. They give your lawn a gentle feed over a longer period. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and remember to water the fertiliser in. You also shouldn’t over fertilise. If your lawn is growing well, any extra fertiliser will just be wasted.

Watering well is the key to a luscious lawn. It’s best to water in the morning as you’ll avoid too much evaporation and the risk of your lawn staying damp overnight. You should water deeply rather than frequent, shallow watering. This will encourage deep root growth. As the seasons change, so should your watering pattern. A good test if your lawn needs more water is to see if your footprint remains as you walk across the lawn. If it does, time to water.

Looking after your lawn can be easy and a few small changes can take a nice lawn to a thriving, luscious part of your home.
