As winter starts to set in, days will become shorter. With less sunlight, it is more important to consider the shade on your lawn. Depending on the type of your lawn, it may not be suitable for too much shade. There are a few things you can do to minimise the impact of shade this winter.

Time to trim. Trim back your trees, bushes and other foliage in order to minimise the shade they will cast in your lawn.

Avoid overwatering. Combined with shade, overwatering will lead to lawn diseases and an unhealthy lawn. You should only water when necessary in shaded areas.

Adjust mowing. Leave extra height for the grass blade to maximise the process of photosynthesis. You should also never mow more than 1/3 of the blade off at a time. Remove the grass clippings after mowing as these will block any sunlight.

Most lawns require at least 3 hours of direct sunlight a day. The less sunlight a lawn receives, the slower it will grow and the slower it can repair itself. By doing these few things, you can greatly help your lawn stay as healthy as possible through winter.
