Making the Most of Daylight in Autumn

With autumn here, daylight hours are starting to decrease. With less sunlight for our lawns, they have less energy and therefore less growth. Unfortunately, this leaves grass prone to bare patches and weed invasion. However, there are some simple things we can do to maximise the sunlight that reaches your lawn.

Depending on your variety of lawn, it will require a certain amount of sunlight every day. Sir Walter DNA Certified Turf can survive on as little as 2-3 hours of daylight due to its wide grass blades. Other varieties such as Nullarbor Couch have a thinner grass blade and require more. The more sunlight that reaches your grass, the more energy it has to grow and repair itself.

Maximising Daylight

It’s important to take some time at the beginning of autumn to ensure your lawn gets as much light as possible.

Remove fallen leaves. As leaves fall, they can create a layer that blocks sunlight from your grass.

Trim surrounding hedges, plants or overhanging branches. By doing so, you’ll minimise the shadows that these plants cast over your lawn.

Avoid over watering. Watering too much or when there isn’t enough daylight will leave your lawn damp and susceptible to disease.

Slowly raise your mowing height. Especially during winter, extra length to the grass blades will be extremely beneficial. With more height, your lawn will be able to absorb more sunlight.

With just a little bit of garden maintenance, you’ll be able to set your lawn up to remain healthy throughout autumn and get as much daylight as possible coming into winter.
