Am I Watering Enough? Or Maybe Too Much?

Maintenance
Along with mowing and fertilising, watering your lawn is one of the three big maintenance practices. But how can you be sure your lawn is getting enough water, or too much?
The easiest way to tell if your lawn is lacking in water is a lack of bounce-back. After walking on your lawn, the grass should spring back to how it was. But, if your footprint remains, it’s likely that your lawn is lacking in water.
However, if your lawn is feeling soggy or spongy, your lawn needs less water.
As the weather changes through the year, so should your watering pattern. When it rains more, you don’t need to water as much but as it dries up, you’ll need to water more often. The easiest thing to do is to install a sprinkler system with a rain gauge. A sprinkler system will also ensure even coverage for your lawn.
Keep in mind that different lawn varieties require different amounts of water. This may affect which lawn you choose for your backyard. Some varieties may not need much watering at all besides the natural rainfall.
You should make sure to water in the morning or afternoon. If you water in the middle of the day, you risk a lot of evaporation and if a lawn remains damp at night, it is more likely to have fungal issues.
Watering deeply and less frequently will also make a huge difference to your lawn. This practice mimics natural rainfall and trains your lawn to be more drought tolerant.
It is important that your lawn receives the right amount of water. Too little and your lawn will weaken and there is a higher likelihood of invading weeds or your lawn dying. However, too much water can lead to lawn disease. By following these tips, your lawn will be thriving in no time.
